What is Nanotechnology?

- Nanotechnology is a field in which science, engineering, and technology is dealt with on a nano scale

- The prefix "nano" means one-billionth of a meter
- A nanoparticle is created by re-arranging atoms and molecules on a molecular level

- Nanoparticles may be engineered to complete a specific task

Drug delivery systems are engineered technologies for the targeted delivery and/or controlled release of therapeutic agents

- Cell/Gene Therapy: the use of therapeutic DNA to treat diseases

- Personalized Medicine: the ability to use a person's molecular characteristics and genetic distinctions to diagnose and treat disorders

- Biomarker: A substance that is introduced to an organism to measure aspects of health such as; organ function, immune response, and the presence of a disease

- Molecular Diagnostics: The method used for analyzing biomarkers. This process includes analysis of the way a person's genes are expressed into proteins

- Drug Discovery: Properties of substances change when nanosized; therefore, new medicine can be made from the synthesis of nanosized materials
